Avril Bell

Avril Bell

Avril Bell is a Pākehā New Zealander and an Honorary Associate Professor in Sociology at Waipapa Taumata Rau/The University of Auckland. Throughout her career her research has focused on what it means to be Pākehā and on Māori-Pākehā relationships in the context of the legacy of our colonial history. Her book, Relating Indigenous and Settler Identities: Beyond Domination (2014, Palgrave) extended this focus to make connections between Aotearoa New Zealand and indigenous-settler relations in Australia, Canada and the USA. She is also co-editor of A Land of Milk and Honey? Making Sense of Aotearoa New Zealand (2017, Auckland University Press). Her most recent book, Becoming Tangata Tiriti: Working with Māori, Honouring the Treaty (AUP, 2024) explores the experiences and insights of twelve ordinary and extraordinary non-Māori New Zealanders who have made a commitment to work with and in support of the flourishing of te ao Māori.
