Marcus McShane

Marcus McShane

Marcus is an artist and designer with 22 awards in the areas of theatre, fine arts, architecture, and museum design. His longest-running artwork after 43 installations is Nag, a self-powered studio entirely constructed from found materials where artists must pedal recycled washing machines to generate any power they need. Recently he has been building a studio out of found materials in Houghton Bay, Wellington, creating new theatre designs, and working on two pieces of his own, Velocine and If Words Were Water. Many of the things he makes revolve around the intersection of light and text. Marcus has a master’s degree in Literature and started out as a writer before realising that writing involved a lot of time sitting still. He is a Creative New Zealand Fellow for 2025 and his interests include finding ways to shrink his carbon footprint, growing vegetables, building bicycles, and reading things worth reading.
