WRITING PAST WRONGS: PAUL DIAMOND, PADDY RICHARDSON (2023)

Early 20th-century injustices are recontextualised in two recent books. Paul Diamond’s (Ngāti Kahu, Ngāti Hau, Ngāti Hine, Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Whakaue) Ockham New Zealand Book Awards shortlisted Downfall delves into the story of Charles Mackay, former Mayor of Whanganui, tried and convicted as much for his homosexuality as for attempted murder. Fleeing to Europe after his jail term he briefly finds his community in the decadence of 1920s Weimar Berlin before being tragically killed. Paddy Richardson’s novel By the Green of the Spring shines a light on the inhumanity endured by those of German heritage interred on Matiu Somes Island during WWI. They discuss their fascination with these two chapters in our history. Chaired by Dan Salmon
