Behind the current surge of interest in learning te reo Māori, there stand warriors who have fought long and hard to keep the language and culture alive. Sir Tīmoti Kāretu was raised speaking te reo Māori, learning English when he was seven. Now fluent in four languages, he has devoted much of his life to the revitalisation of his first language. Formidable and opinionated Kāretu recently combined forces with Professor Wharehuia Milroy to write He Kupu Tuku Iho, a book which examines Māori cultural knowledge, published only in te reo Māori.
