The Waitangi Tribunal - 50 Years

Late 2025 marked 50 years since the establishment of the Waitangi Tribunal, an institution that has had a pivotal role in Aotearoa New Zealand’s history and identity.

50 Years of The Waitangi Tribunal – WhakamanaiTeTiriti collates essays from a range of contributors surveying the decisions, results and reports of the Tribunal over its half a century.

Spanning land, water, the settlements process, the Kaupapa Inquiries, social policy, mana and rangatiratanga,it represents the breadth of issues considered by the Tribunal, and its impact on complex legal concepts, representation of communities and understanding of TeTiriti o Waitangi.

The book’s co-editor Carwyn Jones (Ngāti Kahungunu, Te Aitanga-a-Māhaki) and contributors Margaret Mutu (Ngāti Kahu, Te Rarawa, Ngāti Whātua) and Jacqueline Paul (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāti Kahungunu ki Heretaunga) join Dale Husband (Ngāti Maru) to reflect on the Tribunal’s anniversary, and what its future might hold.
