The Cost of Care

Best-selling medical memoirs The Unlikely Doctor by Dr Timoti Te Moke and Everything but the Medicine by Lucy O’Hagan ask urgent questions about what good care in contemporary Aotearoa New Zealand means – and about who gets to give it.

Te Moke’s remarkable story moves from gang life and prison to becoming a doctor at the age of 56. O’Hagan’s spans medical school misogyny, fighting for those on the margins, and learning self-care after burning out helping others.

They join Dale Husband (Ngāti Maru) for a powerful conversation about what being a good doctor in our country today means; their varied routes to and through the profession; and what barriers, boundaries and biases must be dismantled if we are to care for those who need it most.
