Retelling Female Histories

Across centuries and continents, women’s stories have been suppressed, distorted, or omitted altogether from the history books.

Carole Beu meets three authors writing them back in.

Whether in her fiction or biographies, acclaimed French writer Alexandra Lapierre has brought great women neglected by history to life – most recently Stella Miles Franklin.

Irish-Indian poet and playwright Nikita Gill’s work recentres women in folklore and Greek and Hindu myth. Her latest work is an electrifying retelling of the Greek goddess Hekate.

In Fulvia, NZ talent Kaarina Parker (Ngāpuhi) resurrects an exceptional Roman noblewoman from history’s margins.

Together they discuss the drive, joys and challenges – as well as the years of hard work and research – behind bringing these women into the light.
