How do you pace a story? Do you treat scenes equally, no matter how much narrative weight they carry? This workshop will tackle the amount of detail a story needs, and figure out ways to move the plot along or, linger over high-impact scenes, creating tension in your writing. Designed for people whose writing is flat and who need to inject a few bumps and curves.

US novelist Amy Bloom, author of three short story collections and three novels, offers a workshop on the relationship between character and story and the ways in which character leads to story, and events reveal character. Come primed to write.

Focussing on metaphor and simile, poet Vona Groarke looks at deploying imagery to energise the language of the everyday, and to wire it for that jolt of surprise that is at the heart of the well- made poem. Participants will examine a range of poems that use metaphor and simile to good and various effect, and will spend some time striking images of their own in a writing exercise. Group discussion included.

What can the practice of writing fiction teach you about the theory
of writing fiction? David Mitchell offers a personal “playlist” of insights, hints and advice stumbled upon during the writing of his six novels. Creative writing is creative because it’s individual and subjective, but nevertheless Mitchell aims to provide
food for thought for all attendees. Participants will be asked to bring along five ideas or observations of their own for a “fiction seed swap” – general, specific, idiosyncratic, or slightly mad. Truth can wear camouflage.
