The Auckland Writers Festival presents two days of sessions celebrating the word in all its forms with 4000 school students. Firing up the next generation of readers and writers are international authors Anthony Horowitz (UK), Morris Gleitzman (AUS), Laurie Halse Anderson (US), and Natalie Haynes (UK). With them are New Zealand writing stars Bernard Beckett, Rachael Craw, Whiti Hereaka, Raymond McGrath, Ant Sang, Grace Taylor, Hollie Fullbrook (aka Tiny Ruins), Zak Waipara and Philippa Werry. For five days Auckland central fizzes with ideas as the Festival presents more than 150 speakers – novelists, poets, scientists, historians, musicians, filmmakers, actors, journalists, commentators and performers – in more than 100 events. From debates to readings, conversations, lectures and live shows, there’s something for everyone in a not-to-be missed investigation of our world. For the full programme see pages 11-34.

Auckland University Press invites all Festival goers to the launch of Whale Years, the new poetry collection of Wellington poet, essayist, artist and curator Greg O’Brien.
nIGEL COX unITY BOOkS AWARD
The Nigel Cox Unity Books Award was founded by Unity Books Auckland owner Jo McColl and Susanna Andrew to commemorate Nigel’s love of writing and reading. The award is given to a New Zealand writer unknowingly selected for the prize based on their ‘exceptional way with words’. The recipient receives a $1000 Unity Books voucher to spend as they wish. This year the award will be presented at the Auckland Writers Festival to one of the New Zealand writers appearing in the programme.

HERALD THEATRE, AOTEA CEnTRE
Family Day returns with five 30 minute sessions for children aged 5-10, and another five short story-reading sessions for the under-5s. Presenters include Donovan Bixley, Trish Gribben & Judy Millar, Raymond McGrath, Jenny Palmer, Sally Sutton, Zak Waipara and Philippa Werry. In addition, we present two special events in the ASB Theatre for our younger audience: Awful Auntie’s David Walliams 9-10am on Saturday, and Captain Underpants 9-10am on Sunday. Free but ticketed for children aged 12 and under; student and adult ticket prices apply. Tickets available from Ticketmaster. Book early to avoid disappointment.
